Munich, 17 April 2012 - Cree, a leading provider of LED lighting solutions, marks another milestone in the development of LEDs: Under laboratory conditions, a white power LED achieved a brightness of 254 lumens per watt. This Cree surpasses its own record of 231 lumens per watt, which the company has set up in May 2011. With research breakthroughs like these, Cree drives the development of LEDs played a decisive role.
Research success was made possible by the use of elements of the SC3 innovative technology platform that underlies some XLamp LEDs from Cree today. The SC3 technology platform is based on Cree's silicon carbide technology, an improved LED chip architecture, optimized phosphor and a new case design among others. The new platform allows Cree to bring the most advanced LEDs on the market.
In the laboratory, the LED achieved an efficiency of 254 lm / W at a color temperature of 4408 Kelvin. The tests were conducted under standardized conditions, at room temperature and with an operating current of 350 mA.
"The success of our laboratory set new standards for the industry," said John Edmond, Cree co-founder of and Director of Advanced Optoelectronics. "The goal of all of our research is to allow through ongoing innovation, the broadest possible use of LEDs. Powerful LEDs provide new and better LED-based lights, with much lower system richard sapper cost. "
