The Nationalist Party through the speaker on Carm Mifsud Bonnici Foreign Affairs moved a motion in Parliament in the light of the dire situation in Libya at present, discussing diplomatic relations present in the ongoing political situation between country and Libya.
The motion refers to the endangerment Maltese citizens in Libya and this at a time when the Embassy in Tripoli is it is giving any assistance. The motion asks that the government be transparent and inform the House what is happening even on irregular immigration pier 41 from Libya, some developed in Maltese consulate and illegal trafficking of oil to our country.
Meanwhile later, a press conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs George Vella confirmed that both the Maltese Ambassador to Libya Mannie Galea and second highest officer in the Embassy Patricia Borg are in Libya and Ambassador in Malta. He said that Maltese Embassy in Tripoli two Maltese staff but due to the lack of security of the embassy is kept closed.
The Minister George Vella said that the situation in Libya is beautiful but so far not allramanti and although there is a risk, yet need not become the evacuation of Maltese jisabu in Libya.
He said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Crisis Centre was set up to contact pier 41 about 264 Maltese contained in Libya but there are 40 people who have not yet been contacted. There may also be some Maltese in Libya which one is not aware.
