The use of lighting in greenhouses increases production, improves product quality, and ensures a good spread of the production. The use of LED technology opens the door to new production systems with improved control of growth and quality of crops, thereby improving the energy efficiency of these production systems.
Wageningen UR leads an LED project, which looks at reducing the carbon footprint vision alert of greenhouses by using LED lighting. This project is conducted together with Philips and INRA (France). The project is funded by Climate-KIC, an EU initiative which aims to enable sustainable vision alert growth by addressing greenhouse vision alert gas emissions and reducing the vulnerability to climate change.
The LED project we want to show the benefits of LED lighting for greenhouses. LED lights can emit light in different colors. This offers new possibilities for controlling the morphology of the crop. The energy efficiency of LED lamps is higher than that of the traditional SON-T lamps, so that they give off less heat. Thereby LED lights can be mounted vision alert closer to the crop, so that production can be accelerated. In this LED project are calculations with a 3D crop growth model implemented with the aim to determine the optimal configuration of LEDs in the greenhouse. The reduction of the carbon footprint vision alert of LED application for tomatoes in greenhouses, multilayer cultivation of bulbs and systems are calculated for urban agriculture. Philips introduces a market analysis for these advanced LED lighting systems to determine what the market potential.
In this project we will investigate the possibilities of LEDs and improve its production systems so as to improve their efficiency and to seek new opportunities for marketing. Improvements in production and a decrease in costs will lead to a higher efficiency in the entire chain.
